Becoming Bolder

Navigating the Digital Corporate World as a Black Woman in a Foreign Country.
Introduction

Let me be real with you,  navigating the digital corporate space as a black woman in a foreign land isn’t for the faint-hearted. It’s one thing to build your career in digital marketing; it’s another to do it while constantly questioning if you’re being “too much” or “not enough.” As someone who made that journey, I know how it feels to walk into rooms where no one looks like you, trying to sound confident while battling your own inner critic.

My Story: From Silence to Strategy

When I moved to the UK and started working in the digital marketing space, I thought my work would speak for itself. And sometimes, it did. But more often than not, I found myself holding back — shrinking my voice in meetings, second-guessing my decisions, and feeling like I had to constantly prove myself just to be seen as competent.

I remember one team meeting early in my role. I had a bold, creative campaign idea, but I swallowed it. My inner voice said, “Don’t be the loud one.” Later, someone else pitched something similar and got applauded. That moment hit hard, and it lit something in me: shrinking doesn’t serve anyone — not even you.

The Confidence Shift

Building confidence wasn’t about faking it. It was about doing the inner work: understanding my value, reminding myself that I earned my seat at the table, and refusing to let imposter syndrome narrate my career. I started showing up more fully, speaking up, asking questions, and contributing even if my voice shook.

Here’s what helped me shift:

  • Clarity of Identity: I stopped trying to blend in and started showing up as myself.
  • Finding My Voice: I practiced speaking in smaller settings until it became easier in larger ones.
  • Digital Mastery: I doubled down on my digital skills so no one could question my expertise.
  • Community: I leaned into platforms like Women in Tech SEO to connect, reflect, and grow.

Lessons from the Journey

  1. Your Difference Is Your Power: Don’t dim your identity to make others comfortable. Your story, your culture, your lens, they all bring value.
  2. Confidence Is Built, Not Born: You become bold by doing bold things, one small, brave move at a time.
  3. Digital Spaces Need You: Representation matters, even behind the screen. Whether you’re managing campaigns or leading strategy, your presence is already shifting the culture.

Reflection

  • When was the last time you held back an idea or opinion at work?
  • What would it look like to show up as your full self in your role?
  • Who can you connect with for support, mentorship, or inspiration?

Conclusion
To any person reading this who feels unseen, unheard, or unsure, I see you. I am you. But I’m also becoming bolder every day, and so can you. The digital world is vast, but there’s space for your brilliance. Keep growing, keep speaking, and don’t wait for permission to take up space.
